Best Mattresses for Under $1000

Everyone wants and deserves to have a good night’s rest every night. But not everyone can (or is willing to) spend a huge amount of money on a mattress. If you look at the mattresses available online today, you’ll see them ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to thousands. But can a more expensive mattress guarantee better sleep? Yes and no.

Of course, a higher price means a more advanced design and different materials. But this doesn’t mean that you cannot get the best mattress without spending your life savings. In fact, we picked out the five best mattresses for under $1000. And we believe that each one can provide you with great quality sleep.

Quality vs Price

How does the price really affect the quality of a mattress? Does a lower price point always equal bad? No, not always.

There are mattresses on the market that go for under $1000 and are of great quality. They’re made by reputable brands and come with industry-standard sleep trials and warranties.

However, the price does have an effect on the design and sometimes the materials of these mattresses. Meaning, cheaper mattresses will not always have an advanced design than their more expensive counterparts would.

The same goes for the materials. They will most likely all be CertiPUR-US® certified, but they may not be as supportive or breathable as the materials found in pricier mattresses.

While there are many different types of mattresses we would recommend staying away from innerspring and hybrid mattresses that are under $1000. This is simply because cheaper coils will not last for a very long time and we wouldn’t want you to wake up with a spring poking your side.

To make sure you get the best deal possible we decided to compile a list of the best mattresses under $1000 available today. Each one of the mattresses mentioned below is good quality and comparable to the more expensive options.

Best Mattress Under $1000 – Zoma

Best Sports Mattress Under $1000 - Zoma

The Zoma is another budget-friendly mattress, and it’s designed for people with active lifestyles. The Zoma offers zoned support and a cooling effect similar to that of Amerisleep AS1. It also provides enhanced mid-back support, which can be great for those searching for a high-quality mattress for back pain.

Construction of the Zoma mattress

The cover of the Zoma mattress is made from mesh-like synthetic material. It’s designed to wick away any moisture and help dissipate excess body heat. This works great for people who get night sweats or sleep hot.

The top memory foam layer found under the cover is the patented Triangulex™. This is a comfort layer that is divided into three support zones. At the feet and the head, this layer contains hundreds of triangular cutouts. The midsection area is solid to provide extra support and relief for the shoulders, the back, and the hips.

The Triangulex™ layer is infused with cooling gels. They help dissipate the heat and create a much cooler type of mattress. If you are a hot sleeper, this will help you sleep cooler through the night.

The second comfort layer is their Reactiv™ latex-like poly-foam. This layer enhances the effect of the layer above as well as helps to keep the spine aligned.

The base layer Support+ is high-density poly-foam. It provides support and longevity to the structure of the mattress. It also improves the mattress’s edge support.

Review of the Zoma mattress

The Triangulex™ layer left us impressed. It provides the mattress with zoned support, placing most concentration on relieving the pressure off the back. Aside from the zoned support, the Zoma mattress offers plush contouring, which is great for lightweight to average weight sleepers. It’s also perfect for people who prefer to sleep on their sides.

Firmness

The Zoma mattress is rated as medium/medium Soft—making it one of the softer mattresses on our list. It’s important to note that this might make the Zoma mattress not a very good match for people who sleep on their stomachs or heavier sleepers because they might not get enough support.

Pressure Point Support

As mentioned before, the mattress’s impressive Triangulex™ layer offers zoned support. This translates into good pressure point relief, especially for back and side sleepers. In addition, the Reactiv™ layer ensures proper alignment of the spine. The two layers together provide great pressure point relief.

Edge Support

Because it’s an all-foam, soft mattress, the Zoma loses out on edge support. If you’re a combination sleeper (someone who changes positions during sleep) you may want to get a bigger size mattress to avoid rolling off the bed. The same is true if you’re planning to share your bed with a partner.

Motion Isolation

What the Zoma mattress loses in edge support, it gains in motion isolation. The soft poly-foam layers absorb all movement making sure your sleep is not interrupted. This is a great feature if you’re planning to share your bed (but make sure to get a larger size than usual).

Versatility

The Zoma mattress is pretty adaptable and works well with nearly all bed frames. It goes well with solid or slatted foundations, platform bed frames, and adjustable beds.

Best Luxury Mattress Under $1000 – Amerisleep AS1

Best Luxury Mattress Under $1000 - Amerisleep AS1

The Amerisleep AS1 is the firmest Amerisleep mattress in their collection. Standing at 10 inches tall, it’s designed to provide the sleeper with gentle-but-firm sleeping experience. The all-foam composition of the mattress is very breathable and provides great pressure point relief. That’s why we picked Amerisleep AS1 as the best mattress under $1000 from the bunch.

Construction of the Amerisleep AS1 mattress

The cover of Amerisleep AS1 is designed with breathability in mind. Their removable cover helps to wick body heat and moisture away from your body. It is simple to remove and clean, keeping the mattress fresher for longer. Because it is quite soft and stretchy, putting it back on the mattress is not a difficult task either.

The first layer of Amerisleep AS1 is 2 inches of partially plant-based Bio-Pur® foam. This foam layer has an open-cell design that allows better airflow through the mattress. It also offers a more responsive feel for the sleeper. All in all, the foam layer is naturally good at pressure point relief and temperature control.

The base layer of the Amerisleep AS1 is 8 inches of high-density support foam. This layer provides the mattress with edge support and longevity.

Review of Amerisleep AS1

Taking into consideration the price of this bed-in-a-box, Amerisleep AS1’s design is surprisingly advanced. The advanced cover design and Bio-Pur® comfort layer place it into a “luxury” bracket within this low-priced list. In fact, we believe the Amerisleep AS1 is the best mattress under $1000 that you can buy.

Firmness

The Amerisleep AS1 is rated as a firm mattress. This makes it an ideal choice for stomach sleepers and people who weigh more. It can also suit back sleepers that prefer to sleep on a firmer surface.

Pressure Point Support

Although it is firm, the Amerisleep AS1 offers great pressure point relief. The Bio-Pur® foam layer is designed to be bouncier compared to traditional memory foam. Yet it still offers pleasant contouring and great spine alignment.

However, as mentioned above, Amerisleep AS1 suits back sleepers and stomach sleepers best. Meaning, you may not be as supported as you’d like if you prefer to sleep on your side.

Edge Support

The mattress’s firmness automatically provides it with good edge support—so if you find yourself sleeping near the edge of the mattress at night, you will still get the support and comfort you need.

Amerisleep AS1’s good edge support also makes it easier to get in and out of the bed as the edges don’t sag. This is a good feature for all sleepers, especially heavy or older people.

Motion Isolation

Being an all-foam mattress, Amerisleep AS1 isolates motion very well. This means you can share your bed without worrying about disturbances during sleep. The open-cell foam and high-density poly-foam work great at absorbing all movement. If you sleep with a partner, this mattress is a very good choice.

Versatility

Amerisleep AS1 is probably the most versatile high-quality mattress on this list. Its size and weight make it compatible with nearly all bed bases. This mattress goes great with slatted bed bases, solid foundations, adjustable bed bases, and even the floor.

Best Budget Mattress – Vaya

Best Budget Mattress - Vaya

The most affordable mattress on our list is the Vaya mattress. With the price tag of $595 for a queen size, this mattress offers surprisingly good sleep.

Unlike other all-foam mattresses in this price range, the Vaya mattress does not use traditional memory foam. Instead, it uses an open-cell foam design similar to that of Amerisleep AS1.

This allows the mattress better breathability and temperature control.

Construction of the Vaya mattress

The Vaya mattress comes in two layers and stands at 12 inches tall. The plush Vaya cover is a synthetic blend that is woven to wick away moisture and excess body heat.

The top layer of this mattress is latex-like foam. It’s 3 inches thick and is made with an open-cell design to allow better airflow and supportive bounce. It also conforms to your body shape as you sleep, taking some pressure off your hips and shoulders.

The second layer found in the Vaya mattress is a 9-inch tall high-density poly-foam. This is a base layer that supports the sleeper’s spine keeping it aligned. The high-density also ensures the mattress doesn’t sag prematurely and keeps the whole structure in place.

Review of the Vaya Mattress

Although its design is not the most impressive on this list, the Vaya mattress is definitely a bang for the buck. It’s a great option if you’re trying to spend as little money as possible but still get a mattress that will perform well.

The materials that the Vaya mattress is made of are CertiPUR-US® certified and the company offers industry-standard sleep trial period and warranty. This means that they may have cut the costs down to keep it affordable, but they did not cut it where it matters most—the quality of the mattress.

Firmness

The Vaya mattress rates as medium in firmness. This makes it a good choice for most types of sleepers. However, if you’re of heavier weight or sleep on your stomach, then perhaps Amerisleep AS1 would be a better choice.

Pressure Point Support

There is no zoned support in this mattress but the open-cell foam design naturally provides a level of pressure point relief. It may not be as effective as other mattresses on this list, but it’s still very good compared to other mattresses in the price range of $500.

Edge Support

The all-foam design of the Vaya mattress with no side reinforcement makes the edge support a bit lacking. But then again, what it loses on some points it definitely wins on others.

Motion Isolation

The first open-cell foam layer provides a level of response and bounce to the sleeper. But it also absorbs motion extremely well. Poly-foam is known for its naturally good motion isolation and the Vaya mattress is no different.

Versatility

The Vaya mattress is well-suited for solid or slatted foundations, platform bed frames, and adjustable beds. As we like to say it—the simple design of the mattress usually has simple requirements.

Best All-Foam Bed Less Than $1000 – Love & Sleep

Best All-Foam Bed Less Than $1000 - Love & Sleep

Although Love & Sleep is an all-foam mattress, its design differs from those made of traditional memory foam mattresses. Nest Bedding uses custom-made infused foam layers that work similarly to latex, yet they have zero latex in them.

Another great thing about Love & Sleep mattress is that it comes in two choices of firmness. This makes it suitable for most types of sleepers, they just need to choose the correct option. However, considering it features latex-free foam, it’s not the best mattress for heavy sleepers as it simply might not provide enough support.

Construction of the Love & Sleep mattress

The Love & Sleep mattress is 10 inches tall and comes in three layers.

The cover is a thin material that’s very breathable and allows the layers below to control the temperature of the sleeper. It’s a special blend of polyester and cotton which Nest Bedding has named Thermic Phase Change Cooling Cover.

Under the cover, you’ll find the first 3-inch layer of Energex foam; this offers pressure relief similar to that of traditional memory foam with bounce that may remind you of latex. Although it feels like a blend of these materials, this layer has no latex in it.

Then comes the 1-inch transitional layer of SmartFlow foam. It’s made from convoluted poly-foam to allow better breathability. It also allows a smooth transition from the softer Energex layer above to the high-density base layer below.

The bottom layer of the Love & Sleep mattress is 6 inches of high-density poly-foam. This layer is very firm to provide better support to the structure of the mattress and the sleeper on it. This sturdy foam also ensures there’s no premature sagging and improves the mattress’s longevity.

NOTE: The description above is of the Love & Sleep mattress in Medium firmness. The Firm version would have 2 inches of Energex foam, 8 inches of the base foam and no transitional Smartflow layer.

Review of the Love & Sleep mattress

We love that Love & Sleep comes with two options of firmness. Most queen mattresses under $1000 do not include this additional bonus. This makes the mattress more appealing to a wider variety of people. However, just like the Vaya mattress mentioned above, Love & Sleep will not be the best option for people of heavier weight.

Firmness

Love & Sleep comes in two firmness options—Medium and Firm. The Medium is best suited for combination sleepers but can also work well for side sleepers and back sleepers who like a softer surface.

The Firm option of the Love & Sleep mattress works best for stomach sleepers as they need a more supportive mattress to prevent their hips from sinking. But it can also suit back sleepers who prefer sleeping on a firmer surface.

Pressure Point Support

Although the Love & Sleep mattress doesn’t have zoned pressure point support, the Energex foam does a good job at pressure point relief. The convoluted transitional layer also aids in contouring the body and keeping the spine aligned.

However, if you’re a strict side sleeper, you may want to look at a mattress with zoned support, such as the Zoma mattress above. That way you’re sure to have your hip supported when you sleep.

Edge Support

Whilst laying on the edge of the Love & Sleep mattress, you’ll feel full support from the layers of foam underneath. In a seated position, the mattress will compress a little more as your body weight will be concentrated on only one spot. Overall, this all-foam mattress provides relatively good edge support. If you’ll be sharing your bed, Love & Sleep is a good choice.

Motion Isolation

The extra bounce from the Energex foam does provide some motion transfer. Its latex-like properties make the movement a little bit more noticeable compared to the other mattresses on our list. If you’ll be sharing your bed with a partner and both of you tend to sleep calmly, then this will be of no issue. However, if one of you is a restless sleeper, you might want to look at other options.

Versatility

The Love & Sleep mattress works well on adjustable bed bases, slatted bed frames, and box spring foundations. It’s a versatile mattress that does not need any special requirements. Nest Bedding does specify that it shouldn’t be placed on the floor though as mold might accumulate.

Best Unique Mattress Under $1000 – The Purple Mattress

Best Unique Mattress Under $1000 - The Purple Mattress

The Purple mattress is a different type of mattress because of its unique feel. It’s still classified as an all-foam mattress, but their patented Purple Grid™ made from Hyper-Elastic Gel Polymer makes it feel unlike foam or latex.

This could be a great choice for people who don’t particularly enjoy the foam or latex feel and would like to try something different. However, the full potential of the Purple mattress can mostly be felt by heavier sleepers. Lightweight or medium-weight people would find it comfy but would not get the most out of the Purple Grid™.

Construction of the Purple mattress

The topper of the Purple mattress is their SoftFlex cover. It’s made from a very stretchy fabric that moves together with the Purple Grid™ underneath. This cover is quilted to allow better breathability and temperature control.

Underneath the cover, we find the Purple’s specialty—the Purple Grid™. It’s a 2-inch thick layer that contains a grid structure for maximum airflow and pressure point relief. The Purple Grid™ also feels more bouncy compared to open-cell poly-foam. And it’s wrapped around the edges with high-density foam to provide better edge support.

Under the Purple Grid™ is two layers of poly-foam. The upper layer is slightly softer and the lower layer is firmer to allow gradual transition.

The softer poly-foam aids the Purple Grid™ in providing the sleeper with better pressure point relief. It also keeps the spine aligned when you sleep. And the firmer poly-foam layer acts as a supportive base for the mattress.

Review of the Purple mattress

The Purple mattress doesn’t have the slow compression effect that all the other mattresses on this list do. The grid offers full support, and if pushed a little harder, it collapses; this is an effect that some may find uncomfortable, but for those who don’t like the “sinking” feeling of poly-foam, it could be perfect.

If you’re looking for something new and exciting you can give the Purple mattress a try. And if you find it’s not for you, return it risk-free within 100 days of purchase to receive a full refund.

Firmness

The Purple mattress rates as Medium-Firm. But it very much depends on the sleepers’ weight as well. For example, heavier sleepers would rate this mattress as a Medium, as their weight would fully activate the Purple Grid™. And lightweight sleepers would find it on the firm side because they’d be sleeping on top of the mattress rather than in it.

Pressure Point Support

The Purple Grid™ offers good support if you’re of heavier weight. If you’re of average weight, then the Purple mattress would suit you if you tend to sleep on your back or your stomach. Most side sleepers would find that the mattress does not give enough pressure point relief. Meaning, you’d still feel pressure on your hip and shoulders.

Edge Support

The reinforced sides of the Purple Grid™ provide this mattress with really good edge support. So if you end up sleeping close to the edge, or sitting on the edge of the mattress, you’ll feel well supported without the risk of rolling off.

Motion Isolation

The Hyper-Elastic Gel Polymer doesn’t do great at motion isolation. Meaning, if you drop something on the bed or your partner twists and turns in their sleep, you will most likely feel the movement.

Versatility

Same as our favorite Amerisleep AS1, the Purple mattress can be placed on any surface you see fit. This includes slatted bed frames, solid bed frames, box spring foundations, adjustable bed frames, and even the floor.

Bottom line

In this mattress review, we find that you don’t necessarily have to spend thousands of dollars in order to buy a good mattress. There’s a pretty big variety of options under $1000. The top five mattresses mentioned in this article are our favorite, with Amerisleep AS1 being the best one. But we’re sure there are other good options too that did not make it to our list.
