best mattress for restless sleepers

Amerisleep offers five different models varying in firmness; the firm collection includes their AS1 and AS2 models, their AS4 and AS5 complete their soft collection, and the AS3 is their true medium model. Each of their mattresses is designed for sleeping styles; the firmer mattresses recommended for stomach and back sleepers while softer mattresses are recommended for side and combination sleepers. What’s the Best Bed recommends Amerisleep’s AS3 model for restless sleepers. The AS3 model is a true medium level of firmness and provides great motion isolation, perfect for somebody who tosses and turns throughout the night.

The first layer is Bio-Pur® memory foam; designed with a large, open-cell structure; this layer is more breathable than standard memory foam. This layer works with the lightweight cover to create a cool sleeping environment, eliminating the worries of overheating throughout the night.

HIVE® Technology

Beneath the two inches of Bio-Pur® foam is the Affinity layer, which features HIVE® technology. HIVE® technology contains hundreds of hexagon-shaped cutouts grouped into five comfort zones- the head, shoulders, back, hips and feet. This type of zoned support is important for restless sleepers because it provides the support your body needs regardless of your sleeping position.

Directly below the Affinity layer with HIVE® technology, is Amerisleep’s Bio-Core® layer. This durable layer supports the layers above, and could be why Amerisleep is able to offer a 20-year warranty on its mattresses.

Sleep Trial

Amerisleep has a 100-night sleep trial on all of their mattresses. They believe it’s important to try your mattress in your own home for more than a few nights to get the most genuine feel for what their mattresses can offer. Any time within the 100 days, you’re able to return or exchange your mattress at no cost to you. Amerisleep will arrange to have your old mattress picked up and removed, taking the hassle out of the return. It’s important to take into consideration when transitioning mattresses, your body will undergo an adjustment cycle lasting up to 30 days; they urge you to try their mattresses for 30 days while your body adjusts, but does not require you keep it for 30 days before opting to return or exchange.

During the second 10 years, they will replace your mattress at 50% off the original price. To be deemed defective, your mattress must have a visible sag of at least .75 inches.

The Helix Split Firmness Mattress

Helix exclusively offers hybrid mattresses, combining the benefits of memory foam with the support of pocketed coils. For the last few years, Helix has been designing and creating mattresses for couples, focusing mostly on increasing motion isolation. For restless sleepers finding themselves tossing and turning throughout the night, this makes Helix a great choice.

They offer six different models of their mattress, all ranging in firmness and designed for types of sleepers. Each model is offered in Standard and Luxe options; for this article, we will be focusing on the composition of their Standard models. The Standard models are 10 inches in height, giving them a firmer feel than a taller mattress. Upon entering the website, Helix prompts you to complete their Sleep Quiz; this will find the ideal model for you based off of your sleep preferences. If you are sharing the mattress with a partner, they’ll even split the bed, making two halves of firmness.

Helix Two Touch Design Cover

Every Helix mattress comes with a stretchy top cover composed of two layers. The top layer is soft to the touch. The layer below is designed to keep air flowing through the mattress with increased breathability than the layer above. Though sleeping hot is not as big of a concern with hybrid mattresses, Helix still designed this cover to combat the potential issue. They also give customers the option to upgrade to their Ultra-Cool Cover, which is a good fit for individuals who find themselves waking up hot or sweating throughout the night.

Comfort Layer: Memory Plus Foam

The top layer is every mattress is made from Helix’s unique blend of memory foam, designed to promote better response and cooling than ordinary memory foam. It has a latex-like feel, providing more bounce back.

Transition Layer: Memory Plus Foam

Underneath the comfort layer, is another layer of foam acting as a pressure relief system. It is made from the same foam used in the comfort layer but has a lower density to provide ergonomic support and soft cushioning.

Body Shape Layer: Wrapped Coils

Next comes a layer of pocketed coils, individually wrapped to cradle your body while increasing motion isolation. The perimeter of the mattress is reinforced to create increased edge support.

DuraDense Foam

The base layer of every mattress is made of their durable polyurethane foam. The bottom layer is strong enough to support the coil system, layers above, and a sleeper for at least the next decade. Should your mattress sag or become damaged, Helix offers a 10-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

Your new mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. Helix requires you keep your mattress for at least 30 days and ride out the duration of the adjustment cycle; however, any time after 30 days, you have the option to return your mattress for a full refund. Because they require you to keep the mattress for 30 days, they offer comfort and support layers to help troubleshoot any discomfort you are experiencing. They will send you those layers free of charge to help find a solution to your pain.

Warranty Information

Helix offers a 10-year limited warranty on their standard mattresses. The warranty only applies to the original purchaser of the mattress and a proof of purchase will be required to claim your warranty. In the 10 years, Helix will repair or replace (if needed) your mattress should it have any flaw in the manufacturing; eligible defects include a flaw in the zipper of the cover, any split or cracks in the material not resulting from normal wear and tear, and a visible indentation in the mattress greater than 1 inch in height. Should you have to return your mattress during the warranty period, it will be your responsibility to ship it back to them; however, they will reimburse you up to $100 for shipping if your mattress is deemed defective. The downside to this warranty is should you have to claim it, you will be left without a mattress for up to 90 days while they work on the repair and return.

The Spindle Latex Mattress

spindle mattress

Spindle mattresses are made from 100% natural materials; combining natural latex with organic cotton and natural wool, they aim to be the greenest mattress makers on the market. They offer one 10-inch model that comes in four levels of firmness, each model made from layers of the same natural latex blend. For restless sleepers, Simply Rest recommends aiming for a medium feel because it will adequately support your body while providing plenty of pressure relief.

Natural Wool Batting

The cover of all Spindle mattresses is made from a combination of their organic cotton and natural wool batting. The natural wool batting works to wick away moisture, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also provides a natural flame barrier without having to add any harmful chemicals.

Organic Cotton

Spindle’s organic cotton, used in combination with the natural wool batting to create the cover, is made without pesticides, pigments, or bleach. It is grown in Texas, New Mexico, and sometimes even India; it is then knit to Spindle’s specifications for optimal comfort.

Natural Latex

Every Spindle mattress has three layers of latex; depending on the level of firmness you choose, each layer will be either medium latex or firm latex. The medium mattress has two layers of medium latex followed by a bottom layer of firm latex. The top two layers of latex function to provide pressure relief and keep your spine in place, while the bottom layer is designed to create a stable base for the mattress and sleeper. Latex has its pros and cons; because it is a naturally cooling material, it helps keep you cool throughout the night, but it’s also a bouncy material and has poor motion isolation. If you are restless because you find yourself waking up hot throughout the night, this may be an excellent solution for you; however, if you are somebody who is restless because you’re a light sleeper, this may not be the best fit for you.

Sleep Trial

Spindle offers a generous 365-night sleep trial to its customers. If you decide to go with Spindle, you have an entire year to test it out and determine whether or not you want to keep it. If you decide within the year you’d rather return it and look elsewhere, they will issue you a full refund after you donate the mattress to charity.

Warranty Information

If you fall in love with your new mattress, you’re covered from any defects by Spindle’s 10-year limited warranty. Should the latex fail within the first 10 years, they will replace it for you free of charge. To deem their latex as “failed,” it must have a sag of at least .75 inches. Spindle also offers a 25-year Comfort Life Program to its customers. By opting into this program, you are able to buy replacement parts for your mattress at a discounted price. This keeps your mattress in tip-top condition by allowing you to modify it as you need over the years instead of buying a brand new mattress 10 years down the line.

The Muse Mattress

Muse offers one model of mattress, The Muse, in three varying levels of firmness- soft, medium, and firm. For restless sleepers, we usually recommend medium mattresses; however, when it comes to The Muse, we recommend restless sleepers opt for the firm feel. If you’re not convinced firm is the best fit for you, they have a sleep quiz on their website to give customers a personalized recommendation based on your sleeping habits. Their all-foam mattresses are produced according to CertiPUR-US® guidelines; this ensures you aren’t breathing in any harmful chemicals, flame retardants, or formaldehyde from your mattress while you sleep.

Washable Cooling Cover

The covers of all Muse mattresses are removable and washable. The base cover attaches to the cooling cover with a zipper, making it simple to get on and off. The cooling cover is made with unique phase-changing Diamond Breeze yarns that absorb ambient temperature in the room and help keep the mattress cool throughout the night. The technology works like your favorite activewear by wicking away moisture from your body, keeping your temperature regulated while you sleep.

Temperature-Regulating Gel Foam

The top layer of the Muse mattress is a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam. This gel-infused foam works in combination with the Diamond Breeze yarns to create a cool sleeping environment. In addition to regulating your body temperature, this layer contours to your body to provide gentle relief and support.

Responsive Comfort Layer

Below is another 2-inch layer of foam. This responsive layer has varying densities to create a range of firmness levels. Stacking two memory foam layers on top of one another creates great motion isolation throughout the mattress; this means if you’re somebody who is restless and you sleep with a partner, you can toss and turn as much as you want and they won’t feel a thing.

Supportive Foundation

The bottom layer is an 8-inch base; dense and durable, it works as a foundation to support the sleeper above. This foundation is designed to eliminate the sinking-in feeling sometimes associated with memory foam. It also provides adequate edge support so you can sit on the corner of your mattress without sliding onto the floor. Altogether, this mattress comes in at 12 inches in height, making it ideal for almost every bed frame.

Sleep Trial

When you buy your Muse mattress, it comes with 120 nights to try it out; you have the option to return it for a full refund at any time within the trial period. Should you decide you need to return your mattress, Muse will help you find a local charity or non-profit to donate it to. Once you have shown proof of donation, Muse will issue your full refund.

Warranty Information

If you decide during your sleep trial you made the right purchase and Muse is the best fit for you, you’re covered by their 10-year limited warranty. The warranty covers any visible indentations greater than .75 inches, splits or cracks in the material, and tears in the fabric due to manufacturing defects. Should you find yourself needing to claim your warranty, Muse will replace your mattress for you after you present proof of purchase and they deem it defective.

The Nature’s Novel Latex Mattress by Sweet Zzz

The Nature’s Novel Latex mattress is handmade exclusively from natural materials and renewable resources, making it both healthy and eco-friendly. Sweet Zzz combines Talalay and Dunlop latex to give customers the great support of Dunlop latex with the superior contouring properties of Talalay. Unlike the other brands on this list, Sweet Zzz has one model and does not give you the option to choose between levels of firmness. Since all of the layers are quite dense, this mattress is on the firmer side, with SweetZzz even rating it as 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Because everybody has different sleeping styles and preferences, this isn’t going to be the perfect mattress for everybody.

Natural Cover

Made from organic cotton and 1 inch of natural wool, The Nature’s Novel cover is antiallergenic, naturally flame retardant, flexible, and very durable. Organic cotton and wool are both naturally cool; they work in both hot and cold weather to wick away moisture from your body and keep you cozy. In hot weather, it works to keep you cool, while on colder days, it warms you up.

Natural Talalay Latex

The first layer is 2 inches of 100% natural Talalay latex; being both naturally breathable and buoyant, this layer contours to your body and works in conjunction with the cover to keep you cool while you sleep. The cells of Talalay latex are 50% larger than standard memory foam and do not trap heat, creating a neutral environment that won’t wake you up during the night. SweetZzz extracts their Talalay latex from rubber trees, ensuring they are not harming the trees during the task; this makes their process completely renewable. Another nice perk to natural latex is it’s also hypoallergenic and extremely durable.

Dunlop Latex

Beneath, is 2 inches of Dunlop latex. The difference between the Dunlop latex and Talalay latex layers is how they are manufactured; both are 100% natural, and even Oeko-Tex certified as Class 1, the highest possible score. Oeko-Tex certification verifies their materials are free of any harmful chemicals. While Talalay latex is used above as a cushion, the firmer Dunlop latex lies below and adds excellent support.

Core Layer

All of these layers sit on top of a 7-inch, high-density poly-foam base. The purpose of this base is to support the layers above. A big concern with latex mattresses is motion transfer since they have a bouncier feel; this core layer helps eliminate that worry by absorbing motion from above. This allows a restless sleeper to sleep soundly despite any other motion in the bed.

Sleep Trial

Sweet Zzz gives its customers a 100-night, risk-free sleep trial to test their new mattress. If you decide you don’t want to keep your mattress, Sweet Zzz will issue you a full refund after you have donated the mattress to a charity of your choice and provide them with proof of donation.

Warranty Information

All Sweet Zzz mattresses come with a lifetime warranty. Because a lifetime is a long time, the warranty applies only to the original purchaser. At any point in your lifetime your mattress has a visible sag at least .75 inches, Sweet Zzz will repair or replace it for you free of charge.

The Sapira Hybrid Mattress by Leesa

best mattress for couples with kids

By combining the benefits of memory foam with pocketed coils, The Sapira Hybrid Mattress highlights the soft foam feel while still offering bouncy support. This mattress provides plenty of contouring while still allowing you to move around freely; so if you are somebody that tosses and turns throughout the night, you won’t be woken up to the feeling of being stuck in your mattress. Sapira uses two types of foam in their beds, Avena®, and standard memory foam; this blend of foam with pocketed coils creates a slightly firmer mattress that is great for those who often change sleeping positions.

Lycra and Polyester Cover

The covers of Sapira mattresses are made from a blend of Lycra and polyester; a mix that has gained its popularity for its stretchiness and ability to wick away moisture. The ability to wick away moisture helps promote a regulated sleeping environment, keeping you warm in colder climates and cool in hotter environments.

Avena Foam Comfort Layer

The top layer of the Sapira Hybrid is made from 1.5 of their Avena® foam, designed with perforations to encourage airflow and reduce the temperature of the mattress. Beyond creating a cool sleeping environment, this layer provides balanced body contouring and limited motion transfer, ideal for restless sleepers.

Memory Foam Recovery Layer

Beneath the comfort layer lies two layers made from standard memory foam. The recovery layer is formed from softer memory foam; this layer creates a soft contouring feeling. It is also designed to offer pinpointed pressure relief, and it works with the pocketed coils to give the sleeper above adequate pressure relief. Below the recovery layer, is a transition layer composed of 1-inch, high-density memory foam. This layer adds some cushion between the pocketed coils and the two support layers above, and it also prevents you from sinking into the two layers of low-density foam above. These two layers run the risk of retaining heat in the mattress because they are made from standard memory foam; however, the Avena® foam layer does it’s best to combat that issue. Though this mattress isn’t the coolest on our list, it shouldn’t be an issue unless you are somebody who already struggles with sleeping hot.

Pocketed Coil Support Layer

Below the memory foam layers is a layer made from thousands of 6-inch individually-wrapped pocket springs; this layer creates the bouncy feel, not every memory foam mattress has. Because the coils are pocketed, there is limited motion transfer and increased relief for pressure points. This layer also provides enhanced edge support than a standard memory foam mattress.

Core Layer

All of these layers sit atop a layer of 1-inch high-density foam. The function of the high-density foam is to create a sturdy base for the rest of the mattress and a platform for the pocketed coils to bounce off from. Though this mattress has a total of five layers, it only stacks up to 11 inches in thickness; even though The Sapira is on the smaller side, it is still a good size for most bed frames.

Sleep Trial

All Leesa mattresses come with a 100-night risk-free sleep trial. They typically require you to wait a minimum of 30 days before making a return or exchange; however, customers have commented in online reviews that after giving them a call, they’ve been able to return their mattress before the 30-day mark.

Warranty Information

Your new Sapira comes with a 10-year full replacement limited warranty. Meaning, for the first 10 years after you buy your mattress, Leesa will repair or replace it free of charge if it becomes defected. For your mattress to be considered defective it must have a manufacturing imperfection in the seams or zipper of cover, or flaw in the craftsmanship of memory foam causing any splits or cracks, or a visible indentation greater than 1 inch. It’s important to note, despite Leesa not charging for the repair or replacement of your mattress, you are responsible for any shipping costs associated with the return process.

The Loom & Leaf Memory Foam Mattress by Saatva

The Loom & Leaf (L&L) mattress is an all-foam mattress combining both traditional and gel-infused memory foam to create an optimal sleeping environment. Customers can choose from two levels of firmness, firm and relaxed firm, both of which have extra lumbar region support; this additional support is excellent for people who have trouble sleeping or like to change sleeping positions during the night. Depending on your body size, both the relaxed firm and firm options are great. Simply Rest recommends The Loom & Leaf firm for restless sleepers because it creates a better surface for your spine alignment.

Quilted Organic Cotton Cover

Their mattress cover is made from organic cotton, natural thistle, and quilted with a thin layer of foam, making it soft to the touch. The thistle acts as a natural flame retardant, eliminating the need to use harmful chemicals to create a fire resistant barrier.

Cooling Layer

The first two layers of The Loom & Leaf is made from gel-infused memory foam. The gel infusion makes a big difference in regards to temperature control; it makes the memory foam cells wider, which allows more air to circulate through the bed away from your body. The first layer is infused with Spinal Zone Gel and shaped like an egg tray, creating air pockets within the bed to promote breathability. On top of that, these layers also add a lot of pressure relief, body contouring, and back support.

Eco-Friendly Premium Foam

Below the cooling layers, lies a 5-pound layer of premium memory foam. This foam is designed to provide pressure relief by contouring to your body. Unlike the layers above, this foam is quite slow to respond to change, giving it phenomenal motion isolation.

Multi-Layer Breathable Support Core

The bottom layer is made from two layers of eco-friendly foam. The first layer acts as a transition layer between the premium foam above and the high-density support foam below. The support foam below is 5.5 inches tall and very durable, it provides a stable core for all of the layers stacked above to rest on. After adding up the layers, The Loom & Leaf stacks up to a total of 12 inches in height.

Sleep Trial

Loom & Leaf has a 120-day return policy starting on the day you receive your mattress. This gives you a few months to try the mattress and decide if you want to keep it. If you decide it’s not for you, L&L will pick your mattress up, donate it, and issue you a full refund. The only fee you would be responsible for is a $99 transportation fee.

Warranty Information

All L&L mattresses come with a 15-year, non-prorated warranty. If L&L deems your mattress defective, they will issue a full replacement to you for the first 2 years of the warranty span. After year 2, they will repair and re-cover your mattress, requiring you to pay a $99 transportation fee to cover shipping costs. It is not clear on their site what considers a mattress defective; if you are considering purchasing, be sure to ask a Loom & Leaf representative about the specifics of the warranty. They also offer their customers a “Fairness Replacement Option.” Should you decide to go that route, you are able to keep your original mattress and buy a new one at a prorated rate. There are no shipping fees associated with your replacement mattress, cutting any additional costs.

Understanding Restless Sleep

If you are a restless sleeper, or you share the bed with a restless partner, you’re all familiar with the struggles that come with falling and staying asleep. The majority of restless sleepers have found relief by finding the best mattress for them, finding their ideal sleeping position, and understanding the root of their restless sleep.

Finding the Ideal Sleeping Position for Restless Sleepers

Regardless of your preferred sleeping style, there is room for improving the quality of your night’s sleep. Side sleepers should aim for a medium-firm mattress to relieve pressure in their shoulders and hips while keeping the spine in alignment. Simply Rest recommends back sleepers opt for a firm mattress with a slightly softer top; the firmness provides the necessary support for your back while the plushness fills any gaps between your lower back and the bed. Stomach sleepers should consider changing their sleeping position altogether. Though it may be comfortable, sleeping on your stomach puts unnecessary pressure on your neck and spine. If you are a restless sleeper that prefers sleeping on your stomach, developing the habit of sleeping in a different position could be the solution to your problem. If you find it too difficult to switch positions, a medium-firm to a firm mattress with no pillow will help improve your posture and give you a better night’s sleep.

Most of the time, if you’re a restless sleeper, you sleep in a combination of positions. If you would classify yourself as a combination sleeper a medium mattress is your best choice because it is the most versatile.

For stomach sleepers, a firmer mattress is usually better; whereas with side sleepers, a softer mattress is usually better. To find the best mattress for stomach sleepers or the best mattress for side sleepers, read our other guides.

Causes of Restless Nights

Pinpointing the exact reason for your restless nights can seem impossible; however, focusing on your diet and your sleeping environment can be an excellent place to start. A bad diet can have a significant impact on your sleep; consuming heavy foods, fast foods, complex sugars, and generally avoiding most healthy foods can prevent you from falling into a deep sleep. To allow yourself to get the soundest sleep, try to leave a two-hour window between your last meal and bedtime. Replacing unhealthy evening snacks with lighter options, such as vegetables, can eliminate going to bed with a full stomach.

Another factor to take into consideration is your sleeping environment. If you are restless because you’re waking up hot or because your partner is tossing and turning, it’s time to evaluate the materials in your mattress. Low-quality foams can lead to sweating during the night, while plant-based foams will keep you cool and dry. Latex mattresses can cause more bounce and motion through the bed, while memory foam will provide a more stable environment and eliminate motion transfer.

Overview of The Best Mattress for Restless Sleepers

Finding a solution to your restless nights is not a lost cause. Though you may feel as if you were born a restless sleeper and there is nothing you can do about it, most people find a small change can make all the difference. Everyone deserves a good night’s rest; when investing into your next decade of sleep, be sure to ask questions and do your research into finding what brand of bed is going to be your best mattress.
